Pua Jiuntia - A Festival Mother and Son - celebrated in Western Odisha



Pua Jiuntia is a well known festival of Kosal or Western Odisha region. It is celebrated in every village and town of western Odisha in the month of Aswina. Pua Jiuntia is generally observed by mothers to invoke the grace of Lord “Dutibahana” for the long life and prosperity of their sons.

Mothers would worship Lord Dutibahana in an open space splendidly decorated with Aam Taran (mango leaves) and flowers. The offerings include 108 duba, 108 unbroken arua rice, the juinta (thread), jugar (made of puffed paddy) and tikhri (made of moong dal).

After a holy dip in a nearby river or water body, the mother breaks her fast, the next the morning, after tying the juintia on the wrist of the children. She also prepares a special dish from 21 types of vegetables and fruits, as mentioned in the mythology.

Nuakhai - The Agrarian Festival of Western Odisha

Nuakhai is a major agricultural festival of Odisha also in India. Nuakhai(also known as. Nabanna) is a festival observed by the mass over the entire western Odisha, particularly Balangir is so famous. Nuakhai is observed to welcome the new rice of the season.



Nuakhai --  The word "Nua" means new and "Khai" means food, so the name means the farmers are in possession of the newly harvested rice. The festival is seen as a new ray of hope, held the day after the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. 

It has a big significance for farmers and the agricultural community. The festival celebrated at a particular time of day which is called lagan. Every home is filled with arsa pitha (a food made with rice), a popular dish in the western part of Odisha. When the lagan comes, the people first remember their village god or goddess and then have their nua.

Nuakhai is the agricultural festival of both the tribal people as well as the caste-Hindus. The festival is observed throughout Odisha, but it is particularly important in the life and culture of the tribal dominated area of Western Odisha. It is a festival for the worship of food grain. It has its best celebration in the Kalahandi, Sambalpur, Balangir, Bargarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, Boudh and Nuapada districts of Western Odisha.

It is now very popular in allover India also.The people of Odisha loves this festival.

Don’t Take Deep-fried or oily Foods: Deep-fried foods and oily foods contain Trans fats. That causes heart disease and can make you fat. Only eat only healthy fats like cold water fish and olive oil to protect your-self from heart disease.

Control Weight: Obesity can be a cause of major illness and other health problems. Always maintain an average weight. If your weight extends from the normal weight, take immediate steps to reduce your weight. You may consult with your doctor to get effective advice to reduce health.

Check Your Cholesterol and Blood Pressure Regularly: High cholesterol and high blood pressure can damage your heart and arteries. You may not any symptoms at early stage and when you notice symptoms, it may be too late. Be careful and test your blood pressure and cholesterol regularly.
